Social entrepreneurship is a rapidly developing and changing business field in which business and nonprofit leaders design, grow, and lead mission-driven enterprises. As the traditional lines blur between business, government, and nonprofit enterprises, it is critical that business students understand the opportunities and challenges in this new landscape. Through guest speakers,
case discussion, lecture, and student presentations this course will explore this emerging field.Because the field of social entrepreneurship is interdisciplinary and in its infancy, the course will be introductory in nature and will draw heavily from cases, speaker experience, and student inquiry.

We adopt the ‘active learning’ and ‘experiential learning’ methods in this course. This implies that:

  1. Learning is a shared responsibility between the instructors and students,
  2. Learning is mutual – everyone engaged in this class (e.g., instructor, students, guest speakers) will learn from each other, and
  3. Learning is experiential – that is, learning is enhanced through practicing the knowledge

The objectives of this class include, but are not limited to.

  1. To introduce students to the concepts, practices, opportunities, and challenges of social entrepreneurship
  2. To engage in an active learning process, involving interaction with other students, and experts in the field of social entrepreneurship.
  3. To provide frameworks and tools that will help students better understand The United Nations Agenda 2030 and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and to apply innovative solutions.
  4. To inspire students to apply their knowledge and skills, regardless of their field of study of specific career path to, “be the change they wish to see in the world”.
