MGMT350/INTL350: Selected Topics in Management: Civil Society and Philanthropy
This course combines theory and practice in providing an in-depth introduction to students interested in philanthropy and civil society development. One half of the course explores the engagement between philanthropic institutions and civil society organizations from a variety of cultural contexts, including the US, Turkey, as well as examples from other European countries. The second component of the course is an experiential learning journey in which participating students will interact with local civil society organizations, to understand their missions, capacity, and needs, then make decisions about placing philanthropic funds toward these ends. Students, working in collaboration with the course instructors and civil society stakeholders, will decide where to place funds, through which means, and in what amount. This unique course will combine in-class learning on the subjects involved, with fieldwork in the community where the concepts will be put into action.
